Love is My Religion

To think of religion as the revealed truth is to invest it with the power to compel conformity and enable non-conformists to be effectively silenced or to be ostracized. Religious practices when you analyze objectively make it obvious that their hidden purpose is to manipulate the external supernatural deity so that this deity will bring divine power in the service of frightened human beings. When the myths and fantasies are scraped away, that is what remains as religion’s ultimate goal. --Bishop John Spong
